Where can I seek support?

There are several available support options and care groups for victims of workplace sexual harassment in Nigeria.  Some are government owned and others are non-governmental, but they are all designed to protect victims and ensure victims obtain justice. Some of the institutions will be highlighted below.

Governmental Organizations

The National Human Rights Commission

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a special federal government agency created to promote and protect human rights across Nigeria.

The Legal Aid Council of Nigeria

Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACoN)provides free legal service to indigent persons in Nigeria. An indigent person is by law assessed as a person that does not earn the national minimum wage (presently, the national minimum wage is about N30,000.00 per month).

Non-governmental organizations

FIDA (International Federation of Women Lawyers)

FIDA is a nonprofit, nonprofit nongovernmental organization made up of female lawyers, their major role is to protect, promote and preserve the rights of women and children in Nigeria. They have branches in 34 states in Nigeria including the FCT. The services of FIDA, includes Free legal representation for indigent women and children, advocacy and policy campaigns, education and training, mediation and counselling services and publishing information resources.

The Mirabel Center

Mirabel Centre is a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) created to provide holistic and high quality medical and psychosocial services to survivors of sexual assault and rape. Mirabel Center focuses on Medical examination and treatment by trained forensic examiners for illness and injuries caused by the assault, Counselling (face to face and telephone) to help cope with the emotional and psychological effects of rape, help in reporting cases matter to the police and provides information on the legal system. It also makes referral to other agencies for help not provided by the Centre.

NULAI Nigeria (Network of Universities Legal Aid Institutions) partners with law clinics across Nigeria to provide pro bono services in terms of legal representation, legal advice, community justice programs etc.

Law Clinics

A law clinic is a law school program that provides legal experience for students as well as legal services mostly to indigent clients. Clinical Professors and Senior Lecturers who are usually experienced lawyers help coordinate the affairs of the law clinics and work on the cases brought to the clinic. Law Clinics in Nigeria provide free legal services to people.  Currently there are about 44 law clinics in Nigeria and many of them have dedicated programs on sexual abuse and sexual harassment.
